Inspirational Practice from My Master (3) - Beyond the written Rules

Inspirational Practice from My Master (3)

[preamble: A friend requested if Kunde Rinpoche could visit a family for someone is experiencing vision blurness due to diabetes and distressing experiences in related family matters. After our practice session of Vajrasattva Chang Chog, it was already past 2300hrs. Rinpoche la went despite he had travelled to perform 2 sessions of phowas for friend's beloved individuals in the morning-afternoon, and 1 session of mass practice on Vajrasattva Chang Chog in the evening, in between with a Dharma Talk and Vajrasattva Tsok offering. ]

As Kunde Rinpoche was walking towards the residence (shop) of the requested family, a little fair girl, aged four approached him, and asked: can you carry me? Rinpoche la consented and carry her up. little girl: thank you. Rinpoche smiled and get her down. Shortly, this little girl learned the Medicine Buddha Mantra easily & chanting together while her grandmother was learning to memorize the Mantra syllable voicing...

After the visit, I was infromed this little girl lost her mother to a heart attack at age 29 this year! Personally, it was heart-aching hearing this painful live experience, and i felt grateful and touched by the compassionate act of Kunde Rinpoche la - responding for humane condition beyond the written rules when embracing the imminent suffering of the lay person in need of support!

Inspirational Practice from My Master(2) [translation]

Inspirational Practice from My Master(2) [translation]
Mosquitoes question again?

Recently, it has been raining. i found the apartment I am residing was visiting by a lot of mosquitoes for days, thus those evenings I could smell the mosquitoes spray gas blowing through wind to my residence. I looked at my own arms and legs -  I have ‘donated’ some blood to them in 2-3days  as the mosquito repellent liquid plucked on the wall has used up more days ago. As a Buddhist, it is difficult to justify intentional killing of insects as rational people would say we need ‘wisdom’ since certain ‘species’ may be harmful to human beings. Ask anyone around locally - who has not known of someone suffered from ‘denggi fever’ or suspected of this infectious tropical disease?

About 2 months ago when my master Kunde Rinpoche was preparing his dharma activities documents, slides, video at his office (also my little living space), they were many mosquitoes for a few days.  When I saw his 2 arms with many red bums of mosquitoes bites, I felt sorry and did not know what to do. He consoled me it was alright for him. Much later we noticed there were some mosquitoes died due to ‘over sucked’ and the body too heavy to fly! Then I saw the Master picked those ‘dead beings’ up, gazed with his silent prayer and put them away to avoid my careless footsteps on them. He said to me in gentle and soft voice that it is alright for him they were too full hence their body became too heavy to fly and thus suffered! (我是没有什么的咯,但是它们吃太饱了很辛苦!) – I felt more than touched, very move by his compassion. In a strange way, my fear towards this sentient beings dissipated….. -  since then, I felt it is not enough to just do my Buddhist chanting occasionally, transfer merits to all sentient beings… even under unforeseen circumstances, it is not easy to co-exist with such living beings irrespective of big or small?

上师行教(一)[Inspirational Practice from My Master(1)]

Inspirational Practice from My Master(1)

One day Kunde Rinpoche stayed in a private hospital to take care of a senior friend who had just taken refuge not long ago, compassionately replacing the 5 children who were educated overseas but cos’ of religious differences and personal conditions unable to visit and provided the needed spiritual supports. Later one day one of his daughters managed to visit him at the hospital, upon reaching and seeing Rinpoche la, she pointed with her index finger from top to bottom(?): you?Monk? Then she push a note (?dollars) into the arms of the Venerable, Rinpoche la who shook his head bowed down and said ‘no  need’(Chinese saying: tolerant to maintain wholeness?), both arms still post in front of his body. When sonam yeshi heard from a friend who witnessed the situation and shared the episode, she was very moved, tolerance is much easier to write and preach than to practice! – In comparison, under such circumstances, self may not even have one percent of such tolerant virtue, and personally felt regretful! – I prostrate to the Guru, May my Master, Kunde Rinpoche sustained impeccable efforts for all Sentient Beings thus be shined in the Light of the Dharma!

与善知识对话 - 上师与弟子(1) [Dialogue with My Spiritual Friend(1)]

Dialogue with my Spiritual Friend: The Master and student

One day my Master asked student:

Master: what would you do if one day I could not walk?

Student: I would send master to the cave for practice.

The student then felt curious and asked back the same question:

Student: what would you do if one day I could not walk?

Master: I would carry you wherever I go.

The student after hearing such felt shameful and decided that no matter how difficult and challenges along the road, she would persist in the dharma practice and assisting the Master’s aspiration in His Dharma works.

Dealing with Incidental Travel Hiccup

posted by sonam yeshi

My Teacher, Rinpoche la was travelling alone from India to Bhutan in a train, in such short time to the rest room (toilet), his travelling luggage undearneat his seat (which he thought is safe) could be just been stolen without the awareness of others. Obviously, someone in the same couch disappeared. Moreover, the other coachmates remained just trying to sit on the fence. Probably the traveller does not look alike in characteristics, and an obvious travller! All travel documents and cash you may think is the safest place to put in such public space could be just like any other similar theft incidences we encoutered or heard of which may be out of our imagination.

On top of this, the most trusted authority nearest to where one lost the luggaged pushed this practitioner away to another police station and to another place, thus for the whole day Rinpoche la was referred here and there from one police station to another - this is a real case of lack of civic-mindedness and considerations. This case is an eye opener for travellers which may be seasoning travelling a land he regards like his own home, and 'so far so safe' and taking for granted people around him are human beings.

My question was - Did those authorities personnel been approached by a helpless traveller consciously try to excute law entrusted without fear or favor, irrespective the traveller is own citizen or not? Is the simple act of allowing or assisting a traveller to make a simple police report he needs to facilitate the documentation of his travelling pass being replacement such difficult? - In such case, it was really a bad image and shame of the responsible personnels who are empowered to uphold security and justice by its government!

But the Rinpoche is such calm and gentle. I do wish he could be 'fierceful' a little with uncivilized authority who has no heart with reason 'this is not our duty in this station! (at least exert the duty of basic protection as a legal traveller) - then why do we have police stations in any country? Aren't they belong to the same government? How could an enforcement authority been such immuned for a request of theft report in public space which involved travelling documents? Don't they understand there are other records available in other systems such as airline check-in luggage etc. and train tickets records in one's computer system? Personally, i think it is not a matter of compassion towards the criminal but to protect the innocent and to uphold the basic security in an environment.

I am posting it to share this experience of my Teacher which happened on 4 October 2012 in a train at India to Bhutan. It is also a reminder and a lesson to all of us when travelling alone in particular, there were 'hugry ghosts' around us, we do not need to understand whether there is really such a realm exist in our cosmology!

Reflecting on the Buddha's Teachings, the mind's lessoned learned : watch our own mind, we may become hungry ghost too if we do not guard our fergile mind?
"To Do Good, To Avoid Evils, This is the Teachings of the Buddhas!" - simple phrase but profound ethical, humane meaning for mind training.

When Conventional Medical Helps Failed - A Reflection

Two days ago while i was engaged in a small project of translation works for health articles, I received a phone call from a long time friend, to whom i had brought Kunde Rinpoche la to bless her mum two years ago when her mum's bleeding did not stop after the operation of colon at the age of 88 (?).  She had been a devout Buddhist for Buddha Amitabha chant for decades (?).  - This time the call is based on friendship and kind-heartedness for her former long time neighbour.

Two years ago, it was a real life practice of contemplative of impermanance of life for me. I drove H.E. Kunde Rinpoche la for near 250KM to reach their home. Rinpoche la brought a gift of Buddha Amitayus for her, my friend was surprised and happy - Her Buddhist name was Amrta, according to her, it meant long life! Further, she said that she consulted another Buddhist friend which her Lama advised her to pray to Amitayus! I was also surprised as before we left leading to her house, personally, i request if Rinpoche la if he could give her a Medicine Buddha! - to my little understanding because we were visiting someone who was very sicked and conventional drugs failed to heal her conditions at that time! Her mum was very delighted to see a Monk (with Lama's robe) who had taken the trouble to visit her - travelling for a long distant, at that time, she had also lost her appetite for food!  Rinpoche la blessed her for quite a long time, feeding her with one mani (Dzogchen medicine pills) & given some for emergency if needed. Shortly after that, she began to eat, and she reiterated it made a great difference to her pain after the blessings and the 'mani'.  Later we left, 2 or 3 (?) weeks later, i received a text message that she had started using support to stand up and walking.  Later the biopsy report confirmed that she had terminal illness, but she lived for another 2 years plus. When she passed away, it happened my friend called to inform me the sad news, that time Rinpoche la was around.  Thus the affinity was such that Rinpoche la did 4 sessions of special prayers for her. For details, readers may read the earlier post.

This time the call for help was because that friend became a patient did not response to conventional medical helps, till she was admitted to one of the famous private local hospital in the city - The doctors found no cause of her sickness which she even could not talk (as at 2 days ago)! Then the family members were very anxious and fearful thus tried to seek mediums' helps (including Hindus' medium!) - thus a variations of 'stories' were reported! The last narration was her 'spirit' was suspected to have entered by a 'male wandering soul'! Furthermore, the common Chinese has the traditional (?) belief that this Lunar calander 7th month is the month of 'ghosts and suffering beings from the hells being released by the Hell King' (until 15 Sept 2012).  My friend requested on their behalf if Kunde Rinpoche la could help?  Kunde Rinpoche la spoke to my friend via phone.  That time was near mid-night, but with compassion,  Kunde Rinpoche la did a session of prayer (a distant from the patient geographically by using a photograph sent by email urgently). The advice from Rinpoche la was 'not to worry, she is OK'. A day later, that friend asked if Rinpoche la could give the mani that he mum had before. Compassionately, he consented without any hesitation! (but due to time and distant reason, it could not be delivered immediately) Then Rinpoche la asked me if anyone could teach her to do the (Padmasambhava) Guru Rinpoche's Mantra Chant? Thus i referred a video of this Mantra Chanting by a Khenpo la retrieved from YouTube (Thanks to YouTube, this is the 'blessings' of technological innovation) also our communication in this case should be credited to the functions of Facebook! - not just to share juicy photographs only, BUT when such urgent communication of  helping someone could be connected in distance!

Later, Kunde Rinpoche mentioned to me that when the human mind is confused, the physical body could be sicked! These 2 days, in my contemplation, i could not help but feeling quite helpless towards the cyclic 'problems' facing our so-called local 'Buddhist' - we have all reasons not to spend time learning the dharma, practice it and cultivate our mind. When conventional medical helps failed, we panic and looked for all kinds of religious assistance irrespective of whether we investigate the teachings, experienced it before that and know that it is beneficial to oneself (do not harm oneself nor others) as long as our 'short-term' problem solved - it may turn into long term problems or tragic circumstances if we were not wise and try to use our common sense?

In reflection: When we spent much resources supported by just a few people who were practicing Buddhist and generously helped the Buddha Amitabha Chang Chog Puja (阿弥陀佛超度法会) in time, energy and financially, we urged enquirers (who happened to see the Puja posters and contacted us) to come and practice together for a special day to transfer merits to all sentient beings, we contacted friends etc. etc... but there were many reasons not to spend a day off to appease the centuries long belief of 'Sentient Beings' who are sufferings and according to Buddhism (all three major schools), needed spiritual assistance to be relieved and released from the unseen state of sufferings! Though one may come for one's own motivation, but it is the Mass prayers by long-time well trained Vajrayana Masters, in this case from the oldest tradition, Nyingma school, specifically Dzogchen tradition!  Personally, i thought that this is where the religious aspects of ceremonial practices in a vast variety of melodious chants (such as Vajrayana Mantras) and scriptural chants by the full-time practitioners using special religious instruments by a Tulku, two Khepos and assisted by a Lama, who possess expertise in monastic long time training have the exclusive role, that self-learners of theoretical Buddha's teachings among Buddhists, regardless of full-time or part-time - may be unless with exceptional compassionate Bodhicittva vow in past lives and/or one is born with that special psychic abilities???,  may still need this 'services' and be part of it - Sangha spirit (fellowship)! Like it or not,  the power of the Chantings by oneself alone and Mass chanting is a great difference! May be only personal experiences could convinced oneself?

Below is a beautiful picture photograph on 31 August 2012 during the Buddha Amitabha Chang Chog for sharing - one may think this little act of request by this is young devotee's relative was 'superstitious', belief it or not, it may have a long-everlasting spiritual effect on this child for her whole life - especially when ife's most unforseen challenges knocks!

Chats with Kunde Rinpoche (1) - Crystal or Coted Plastic?

18 August 2012

posted by sonam yeshi

Chat with H.E. Kunde Rinpoche - Sonam Yeshi. Transcribed in Q&A format (herein address as Tulku) in August 2012.

Q= sonam yeshi, A=Kunde Rinpoche, Bracket ( ) - notes added for clarity, [ ] – expression

Lately, many friends who were new to Vajrayana School in Buddhism asked me of the title (?) H.E. (His Eminence) in addressing a Vajrayana Master / Teacher.  Reading the media news on Vajrayana Buddhism activities actively circulating among email groups, sometimes we may even confused by this title. I thought  It was time I asked Kunde Rinpoche as he has this ‘title’ though most time he asked us not to bother if we addressed it or not in formal writing (as a form of external respect to a recognized Teacher).

Q:  Tulku la, lately I had many friends who were new to Vajrayana School asked me what is H.E. (His Eminence). May we know what is/are the criteria to be ‘awarded’ this title H.E. (His Eminence)?

A: [Traditionally,] H.E. (His Eminence) is addressed to the Abbot (Head) of a Monastery in Vajrayana Tradition.

Q: Can we say all the Heads of every Monastery would automatically be addressed H.E. in front of the Abbot’s dharma name of all the Vajrayana monasteries?

A: By tradition, those monasteries listed in the Map which could be found in Dharamsala Office in India, the Abbot(s) are thus be addressed H.E.

Q: What is/are the criterion/ criteria to be listed? Is the Horthang Tashi Monastery being listed in the Map?

A: It is based on its historical significance. Those monasteries have been ancient in Tibet, more than 100 years old (?). Yes,  Horthang Tashi Monastery  is one of them.

Q: How old is Horthang Tashi Monastery (where Tulku la belongs)?

A:  it is 199 years old!

Q: 2 days ago a friend called from Penang to verify a circulated information of a 3-countries (Qinghai, Nepal & Malaysia) Buddhist Chang Chog Puja (to be presided?) with a name of H.E. Tulku …Rinpoche (sorry, forgotten the name of the Rinpoche), she said the info mentioned his brother , another H.E. Tulku...Rinpoche (sorry, also forgotten the name of the Rinpoche) is at Nepal  (presiding?) the Puja thus sent him here. Do you know is this monastery mentioned, was it listed in the Map (there were some  were concerned) ?

A: [laughter] I don’t know!

Q: May we know how many H.E. could be awarded to one monastery of those listed? In other words, maximum how many Abbots in one monastery?

A: (Traditionally) Maximum is Three.

Q: Can I use Horthang Tashi Monastery as an example? Besides Tulku la, who else we should address H.E.?

A: [laughter] of course.  Tulku Karde is the other Abbot (Karde Rinpoche).

Q: Can we address Tulku Bigar H.E. (i.e. H.E. Bigar Rinpoche?) as his practice i heard has been such amazing (a well known Rinpoche  in Qinghai?) who does not has a mobile phone or a automobile in his monastery, wandering around most time, difficult to be located to request for blessings)?

A: His monastery is about 50 years old, presently there are about less than 30 Rinpoches & Lamas under his guidance. Though he is born on his tongue with the syllable 'Ah' white in color! i regarded him as a very exceptional Tulku due to his detachment towards worldly gains, and he is full of Joy, never show a sign of anger or unhappiness thus far i know him!

Q: Thank you very much, Tulku la for the clarification. Also for sharing so many amazing real life stories practitioners (of yoginis) still found in the special land (outskirts?).  I like to record down our conversation mainly for education purposes. Also, with due respect,  we don’t want simply address you wrongly or give the impression of  ‘publicity title only’ [laughter].

An Auspicious 2-day Buddhist Puja - Blessed by Three Rinpoches

posted by sonam yeshi
revised & edited
I was informed by the coordinator of this special 2-day Puja that a devoted Buddhist take the trouble to telephone to express his rejoicing of this hard-work arrangement of this 2-day auspicious Buddhist Puja, though he is unable to attend them. We thanked this as the heart of rejoicing is an expression of kindness in thoughts!

Today, 7/8/2012, the offering of Naga Vase is closed for registration for blessings chantings until 9/8/2012.  But the registration for Vajrasattva Empowerment is still open for registration until 11/8/12.

In addition, a surprised news! -  i was informed that a Khenpo from Dzogchen Monastery India who has completed his 3 years, 3 months & 3 days retreat is joining to bless the 2-day Puja - what a last minute surprise!!! The chinese has a unique phrase: 殊胜法缘 (my translation: auspicious dharma affinity)!   If any reader is interested to find out about the new library project at Dzogchen Monastery India.
In case you miss the earlier post, this is the 2-day Puja schedule, with rejoicing heart, even viewing the three Rinpoches images, it could be blessed mentally?

The Power of Truth - A Reflection

posted by sonam yeshi

Life Lesson (3)

Last night i was talking to a friend in Penang who is helping to coordinate the coming Naga Puja-Vajrasattva Tsok & Vajrasattva Empowerment (2 days Puja).
I commented to her that there is a 3-day puja going on (4-6/8/12?) in KL at a stadium, their poster designed put "Dzogchen Monaster" (no indication of India or China) besides the big picture of that Teacher (with due respect). It is really a real conflict of interest in worldly sense - as Kunde Rinpoche & Khenpo Kunga Tashi Rinpoche have been trying very hard to help rasing funding for the buildling the new Library at Dzogcehen Monastery India (under construction), to be fair, i like to honestly suggest that the local organization who organized these three days Buddhist Puja to donate the net proceeds of public donations to "Dzogchen Monastery" (India or China) for such 'mis-representated information' (which may arise & cause any confusion?).  i was rather shocked that local organization is not aware of 'intellectual property rights' even it is just the name being used not any image.
Last night, before i went to sleep, i thought this issue of 'mis-representation' could not be forever being 'blurred' -  with good intention, tomorrow is Lunar Calander 6th month 19, the Mahayana Buddhist believe is Avalokitesvara (Kwan Yin) enlightenment day (?) - i did my evening prayers and mentally thought that if that teacher's claimed on the related website (from Taiwan?) of re-incarnation of Avalokitesvara is not true, then today their Puja would be raining. As i was writing this post as at 2.50p.m. - it is really raining (quite heavy!) - as my own act of Truth!
Not long ago, i asked Kunde Rinpoche of the recent heavily pasted posters of a 'god' at Pudu area that brought fears to many concerned Buddhists why was it regarded 'banned' in the Vajrayana tradition? (recently someone name 'Lobsang Dorjee' posted some distored pictures of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama at the facebook, many people did not know and clicked 'like'!).
I was informed of this true story happened in somewhere China, a practitioner who held a big empowerment puja, thousands of Buddhist practitioners went there to attend, but before the event started, the teacher who announced that those who pay homage to the Sakyamuni Buddha & Guru Rinpoche should not attend that ceremony, many thousands pratitioners left on the spot, left about a thousand or so. Then that teacher sat up his special seat, before he could start the ceremony, suddenly hails stones dropped from the sky & hit on him and the wind blown the pillar of the camp off - fell on him & injured!(punishment from sky?). 2 weeks later (?), that man who cursed the Buddha & Guru Rinpoche but using the rituals of Vajrayana Buddhism died in a strange way (to be specific for that case- immediate Karma?) !!!  - this is a real life lessonthis is a real life lesson for all who did not respect the historical Buddha & Guru Rinpoche but using their Teachings in deviated way! for all who did not respect the historical Buddha & Guru Rinpoche but instead using their teachings in deviated ways!

Media & Information Literary in Vajrayana Buddhism - are we competent?

Lately i received some information of dharma activities, especially Buddhist Puja going on or to be held soon after i joined a Vajrayana_Penang  yahoogroup mailing list.

One of the info sheet i read linked to a site (probably created in Taiwan, using Traditional Chinese Character).  While i was taking a (long) break & reading that in my univ. student computer lab, i got quite taken aback when i read the claimed of the Teacher was the re-incarnation of Avalokitesvara etc...! if i were to offend anyone, after thinking for nearly a week, i think it is better i wrote some information on this upon seeking verification from Kunde Rinpoche who studied in Dzogchen Shriseng Monastery, Tibet for nearly a decade. Also i noticed this Teacher has 2 Buddhist centres in Malaysia adopted the word 'Samye'. i was a little confused as i visited the most historical & sacred Samye Monastery in Tibet before.  Then i called my Vajrayana Master/Teacher, Kunde Rinpoche to ask & verify a few questions in my mind. This allow readers' evaluation of those information which had been broadcast in the public domain such as yahoogroup and poster displaying locally.  (These Q&A have been rewording for clarity, bracket wordings meant for personal note)
These were some questions asked & with answers for sharing:
Q1) Tulku la, do you know this Teacher, in the circulated information & website he was a student  of H.H. Pema Kalsang from Dzogchen Shriseng Monastery Tibet?
Answered:  (Tulku la) - he knew this person studying Khenpoship in Dzogchen Shriseng Moastery.  When he was  about 16 years old in that Monastery, this Teacher had just completed the study & left to his own monastery.
ii) - when i tried to verify that the puja text of this Teacher was a student of H.H. Pema Kalsang Rinpoche, Tulku la answered H.H. have many students in Dzogchen Shriseng Monastery, Tibet as HH has been the Kyabje (Teacher?) in the Monastery.
iii) - Further, Tulku la complimented he is a Khenpo, thus has completed the required study as a Rinpoche.
2) when i asked of the re-incarnation claim & emanation of Avalokitesvara in that linked website, Tulku la just said people can claim anything they like, but to live to that emanation, able to benefits people's well beings & sentient beings are essentials; as any (self-claims) of spiritual attainment is just a matter of time the Buddhist community who practice the right path would be wise to know.
3) Can we simply use the word 'Samye' for popularity?
- As the Samye Monastery, historically it was Guru Rinpoche's Monastery. Thus, so far there is no Main Spiritual Abbot in the Monastery as no practitioner is competent to claim for oneself as Guru Rinpoche spiritual attainment yet. (it may be normal to use for reason only the user knows, but this highly respected  historically 'Samye' is sacred in Tibet.)
After the discusssion, we agreed that worldly publicity may be important to attract the crowd to contribute or participate in any Dharma activities, but it has to be done with discreet ethically and fairly. (Skillful Means does not meant NOT grounded in ethics - even academic research "Grounded Theory" emphasized its validity is grounded in data... - my personal grouses).

Today, i received the poster again from the Vajrayana_yahoogroup. I observed that the word "Dzogchen Monastery" has been used in that poster.  One time in a chat, Khenpo Kunga Tashi Rinpoche commented that Sogyal Rinpoche (author of "The Tibetan Book of Living & Dying" once said that his brother, H.H.the 7th Dzogchen Rinpoche was (has been) too compassionate (on the worldly misrepresentation of Dzogchen Monastery & even spiritual hierarchy representation).
Personally, I think to be fair, should anyone or practitioner using Dzogchen Monastery’s  name in their publicity material locally should generously donate (all) the (net) proceeds of the Dharma Puja conducted channel to Dzogchen Monastery (Tibet or India) for the benefits of the Lamas education & training needs (then the merits are virtueous? - "geramnya"). Otherwise, it is just misleading and in information literacy's jargoon word -  misrepresentation" for the general public who is not familiar with Vajrayana Tradition, or find it too troublesome seeking any verification (may be even  do not know where to verify). But unfortunately, our public media literacy and information literacy levels need many efforts to continuously raising this awareness.  Furthermore, the School of Vajrayana Buddhism here is still rather young & growing compared to the other two well established Buddhist traditions - Theravada & Mahayana Schools.
May We be Wise while trying to Practicing Good

Vajrayana Last Rites Rituals - An Experience

Last Friday, i drove Kunde Rinpoche & a Lama to visit a long time friend's house as her mother had departed on last Thursday, aged 90+3 (may be this is the chinese way of calculating age for the departed).  She called to say that she informed me the news because i had visited her late mom with Kunde Rinpoche 2 years ago when she had a colon surgery.  Having personal affinity with her mum, i had to put aside my lag behind study due to personal commitment in assisting in the coming two Buddhist Puja that would assist in the funding for the new Library of Dzogchen Monastery India.

After a tele-conversation with this Buddhist friend, i requested Kunde Rinpoche last Thursday late night if he could help to perform some last rites rituals to assist this friend's family, though they have a local lay Buddhist group to do Amitabha chantings in the evening. Rinpoche la asked me would they be offering a burned animal (like some Chinese families he had seen) and commented 'no killing' involved is the best merits.  My friend commented her late mum had mentioned merits of the Buddhist full-time practitioners are not comparable, and confirmed the ritual ceremony would be only vegetarian.

When we arrived that state which is about 250KM away, it was about 5.30P.M. As the lay Buddhist Amitabha group would be doing the evening chant from 8pm-9.30pm(?), Kunde Rinpoche la humbly adjusted to their needs. We waited till that chanting session completed. Rinpoche la & Lama performed a Buddhist Prayers (my little knowledge only know Vajrasattva 100-Syllable & Mantra)& Smoke Puja (烟供), later Kunde Rinpoche performed a short 'Phowa'. That family also requested him to bless one of the daughters who has been sick & not well (i did not follow to see his blessing for that daughter).

The next day morning, Rinpoche initiated a 100-Buddha ritual after a long series of Blessing Chantings (some Chantings i could recognized with my little experience in Vajrayana Prayers), including Three Refuges, Bodhicitta, Chenrezig, Amitabha Puja & Mantra Chants etc.  We were impressed that Rinpoche could innovatively just drew the Vajrayana Prayer Plate with a lotus, put a picture of the deceased on top of the lotus before the Prayer started .

After the Prayer, another long-time friend who started practising Vajrayana Buddhism in 1997 (?) presented an offering to Rinpoche la & Lama. Her kindness & generosity reminded us of the impotance of making connection with whatever little offering to the recognized Buddhist Practitioners.

That evening after the lay Buddhist Amitabha chanting, Kunde Rinpoche performed Guru Rinpoche's Empowerment to the deceased & the living siblings & relatives. Before the ceremony started, i suggested to make connection with Kunde Rinpoche & the Lama with a minimal offering. They did, for the sake of the highest love and respect to their beloved mum though i was informed that for some of the children, this is the first time they prostrated to Buddhist full-time practitioners.  I was very moved by their kindness & heartful towards their late mum.  Rinpoche la also explained liberated from the Six Realms of Existence entering the Amitabha Pure Land does not meant attainment of Buddhahood, thus we continue to do Buddhist Prayers for this reason.  I was happy to see that daughter was recovered to join this prayer session and later one.

The next day, we were rejoicing to see sign of liberation at the head of the deceased!  With rejoice, Kunde Rinpoche la & Lama performed the Buddhist Prayers with Transference of Merits long text, also blessing the to-be-used porcelain cremation urn upon request. Later Rinpoche la informed me he did the Gelukpa tradition Transference of Merits chant as the Lama is familiar with this instead of the Nyingma Transference of Merits text.  I saluted Rinpoche la's understanding & compassion to make a connection as the Lama who came with him was trained in Sera Buddhist College of Gelukpa tradition.  May be the full-time Vajrayana Practitioners are much open in performing any recognized traditions' rituals with the right conditions.

As Rinpoche la had well-planned to do the necessary prayers for three days, we departed on Sunday, leaving the cremation ceremony for the arranged organization to perform it on Monday.

It was indeed a special experience for me and i believe the Buddhist rituals ceremony bring psychological well beings for the departed living family members. On the way back while driving, i was contemplating on the local Buddhist Chinese who had spent enormously for the deceased relative, sometimes may be lack of information or knowledge and even could be due to inherited superstition?

May the Merits generated from these 3 days extensive Buddhist Prayers be transferred to All Sentient Beings For Liberation & Peace...Amitofo. 南无阿弥陀佛

Mind your language - perceptions of conceptual words

I met someone interested in Buddhism about a month ago. Twice i visited her organic shop, it happened my Teacher, Kunde Rinpoche was arround. In the seconde time, she asked me how i communicate with this Buddhist Teacher who spoke limited simple, sometimes unclear (or inaccurate) pronunciation Mandarin (Chinese).  I told her for the first 3 years, when he visited here, mostly i was driving him here and there, taking care of some of his basic needs.  I have learned much from observing his actions, how he response calmly towards adversities and rude behavors of common people, even Buddhists.  I chatted and asked him many questions as we travelled in my 12-year old automobile. Listening to his lived stories and life experiences are real and practical lessons for me in so called life long learning journey.

Mind your Language - Lived Stories (1)

One of their young Lama who left the monastery in Tibet and studying in Dzogchen Monastery India.  When he was in the monastery, one day one devotee from Australia gave him a sum of cash support for his living.  He did not speak English at all that time. He called one of the Lama who speaks Tibetan to ask how to say 'Thank You Very Much'.  That Lama cheekingly told him 'I Love You'.  He memorized the phrase and went to the kind friend to express the phrase 'I Love You'.  That lady was in her middle age felt so affectionate and held his hands warmly and said 'Thank you, Thank you', showing an expression of very touched by his words. Later he then learned the meaning of this phrase, but luckily it brought much joy to the donor at that moment with perfect cultural meaning in showing affection among people!

Mind your Language - Lived Stories (2)

Last year after published his first translated book in English*, Kunde Rinpoche taught me how to practise Vajrasattva visualization.  He gave a simplied version first and advised to practise progressively as per Dzogchen practice, guided in his Great Perfection book. Almost towards the end of the practice, Kunde  Rinpoche used a term (in Mandarin) '无二无别' (non-duality). He read as 'wu err wu bie'
At that time, i didn't understand the meaning of the terminology yet.  Instead I gave the feedback may be it was better not to use the term to the beginners who do not read much dharma books yet when he was going to guide this practice later in the book launch at Dzogchen Samten Chokling Malaysia .

Lately we had a brief session of Vajrasattva practice (briefly to revise his pronunciation after back to India for nearly a year), after the session, curiously i asked him why he did not used the same term '无二无别' (non-duality) for this session in instructions? He reminded me that i had feedbacked not to use this term as it was not well-pronounced!!!

At that moment, i did not know to laugh or to cry for my own ignorance! - I apologized

Today, i spent more than a hour reading Buddhist teachings online.  I read one very interesting article by Khenpo Cicheng Lodo [my own translations: Praising the Dharma Realm: an abridge translation (?)]. Retrieved: 14 July 2012.
http://www.huidengzhiguang.com//c/2012-03-06/1212.shtml

When i read some of the terms used in explaining Nyingma, and the 'state' of Great Perfection mind training, Ah-huh! - Now i know i was then making the wrong suggestion.  I salute my Teacher's humanity! It also reflect my intellectual 'arrogance'!

Life lessons learned from my Spiritual Friend (1)

Lately, my Spiritual Friend, Kunde Rinpoche la arrived with a young Lama friend.  Personally, i prefer learning practical dharma from Buddhist Spiritual Friends via their presence in persons.  Though i also find reading dharma teachings websites, blogs, microblogs, youtube, real-time webcast could be very helpful and inspiring.

The recent lessons learned when i was trying to serve Kunde Rinpoche la:
a) A childhood story shared:
One day i was trying to serve fruits after a meal.  I gave good bananas just bought from the coldstorage store. He laughed after he had taken. He said that when he was a little boy, one day he went to a nearby town and he saw 2 chinese ladies eating bananas. At that time, this was the first time he saw the fruits people eating without knowing the name :)-D. Thus he might had been looking on with curiosity while these ladies were eating. Then both ladies threw the banana skins towards him and hit his face, they laughed and left. Rinpoche narrated in such childlike, while i was hearing, i did not know to laugh or to cry.
I asked what did he do with that? He said that he did not react, he cleaned his face. Later, he went home and narrated to his mum, his mum explained and later bought him the fruits - bananas.

In our modern culture, i would perceived the ladies who did that was like 'bullying' a child, even arrogant! Later i contemplated on this childhood story, Kunde Rinpoche la had shown me a lived lesson - there is no advantage to react to afflictive emotions shown by others towards us.
Having said that, as a lay person with little Buddhist practice, at this point, i think if i meet such arrogant act, i will pick up the ramnants and threw back! :)- Then i guess my spiritual friend may still gently and tell me that i am fierce! In reflection, i have much to practise watching my own emotion and anger then :)_-D.
Having seen my own mind after the story, the next whole week i practice the four foundations contemplation daily till today - perseverance, perseverance, patience, patience...

2) The magic of A Gift Box
After i returned from Kalachakra in January this year, one day i bought a 'proper' cold jacket for my Spiritual Friend  (after witnessing he treasured the 'worn-out' jacket which other practitioners had reminded him of the perceptions of others towards him. But eventually, a kind Rinpoche exchanged his jacket with him before he left to Dzogchen Shriseng Monastery after the festival).
I kept the new jacket in a square big plastic box which i have been using it to keep gifts for full-time Buddhist practitioners thus far. When i took out that box and presented the gift to Kunde Rinpoche la, he gently reminded me that i should not have bought that for him, and saved  the spendings for my study.
Then Kunde Rinpoche narrated to me that his grandfather (Yeye), Lopon Pema Dechen had such a gift box. His grandpa had not lost any temper thus far (till he passed away). When he was a child, sometimes he was curious and may refused adults instructions. If he cried or 'showed stubborness' in following adult's instructions, Yeye would birng him to his magic box - open his Gift Box to ask him to choose whatever he likes.  He would then choose something (a toy) and happily play with it.  Later, when he had done with it, Yeye would put it back inside the magic box! - Thus anger from adults was saved from this child's playfulness.
That day, after i heard this heartful story of Yeye, i posted this timeless photo i had with him in 2011 at my facebook to share with my Buddhist friends. Here i would like to share with readers who have affinity of this picture of a saintly grandfather that i encountered with altruisctic joys, which was such overwhelming till made my tears flowing down for quite a while without knowing any reason - but truly timeless encounter...This encouter might have changed my life...

[Lopon Pema Dechen (late) 2011]

May Lopon Pema Dechen gained Enlightenment! May His Kindness, Wisdom, Compassion and Patience be the Inspirations to all who had met him in this lifetime striving in practising good.

May all Sentient Beings be Well, Happy and Peaceful.

Reflection on Lay Buddhist Communities (2)

Q1: Is my religion better than yours?

Last month a friend who shared that he met a group of Korean ladies who confronted him in a food stall to 'preach' to him. He said he didn't want to make them felt bad thus he listened to their 'preaching' for a while and gently dissuaded them to leave his table.  I thought he was nice to do that, in my honest opinion, youth are energetic and simpler in critical thinking. In my younger days, i might be even more naive than this group in my enthusiasm in learning some basic teachings of world religions.  Somehow, i have greater affinity with Buddhist teachings, but appreciate universal truths expounded in world religions and sound philosophical thoughts and good cultures.

Q2: Is my teacher (master/guru) better than yours?

Last month, one young Lama travelled with Kunde Rinpoche to this region. This Lama follows Gelukpa school.  We served him, contributed to his basic needs etc. like any other Lamas happened to come here with Tulku or Khenpo.  I happened to receive them at the airport, later we by-passed a Buddhist Centre and we stopped to pay homage to the Three Jewels. One of the young men came out and greeted us when we entered the Centre. It happened a small group of lay Buddhists of the Centre's members  were having a practice program going on.  We paid homage to the Buddha and Bodhisattvas. We looked around, there is a Zopa Rinpoche's photo in significant size displaying on a portable display stand at the side of the main shrine.  i had a short chat with one lady (who happened to study in the same univ. of different program) and then gave a small token for their up-coming puja in a designated box, and later we left - admiring the well-established learning place.  Kunde Rinpoche praised to us that Zopa Rinpoche is a very good and generous Master. In my curiosity, i asked a question, Kunde Rinpoche explained to me that in Vajrayana tradition, the Guru is very significant.
I got to know that one of my good friends whom i know affiliated to this Centre is now the president of this centre.  In retrospection, many years ago, she had kindly invited me to the other branch centre at another side of this city.  Somehow, my affinity was not strong to make a connection. We are good friends, had been learning traditional Buddhist teachings together for many years.  Though our spiritual path have taken a different approach within a same tradition, I have high regards and respect in her practise of compassion and socially engaged activities based on Universal principles of kindness and compassion.

Later in self contemplation, I appreciated Acho Rinpoche's and his students open-heartedness in receiving all guests of different Buddhist schools and traditions.  He has shown kindness and dignity in upholding the Sangha Spirit even though he was recognized as the third incarnation of Horthang Tashi Monastery Retreat Centre Abbot, by Kunde Rinpoche, and confirmed by H.H. Dzogchen Rinpoche and H.H. Sakya Trizin.

Contemplating thus, i thought as a lay buddhist person, i need to remind myself not to forget to fold palms as a symbol of greetings to other fellow practitioners.  Otherwise, the practice of prostration to the Buddhist shrine does not train me a little of less 'self' and no less than ritual symbolic interaction in sociological lens.
